Ambrose bierce uses foreshadowing and flashback influences in "an occurrence at owl creek bridge" in two ways. the first is when farquhar is standing on the platform awaiting to be hanged and he has a flashback to when a disguised union soldier comes to his home as a confederate soldier asking for to burn the titled bridge but in reality is luring him into a trap to have him killed. the loud clanging that farquhar hears is the sound of his own watch ticking, foretelling the sound of his death. he then returns to the present and we read a story of him escaping only to be struck on the back of the neck/head just before he can reach his wife. this blow to the head is actually the noose breaking his neck, the escape was all a dream in his final moments of life.
