Sanger Rainsford and his friend Whitney are two hunters bound for the Amazon basin for a hunting expedition. On their way, Rainsford had emphasized on the two categories of nature- the hunter and the hunted. He even taunts Whitney for being soft. Later, Rainsford while trying to investigate a gunshot he heard, fell into the water and was swept to an unknown island. This land was owned by General Zaroff, also a hunter but not of animals. He hunted humans for sport, a better speciment of a prey with reason, cunning and courage. Rainsford later becomes one of the prey to be hunted, but will be released if he survives three days while being hunted.

Rainsford did survive but decides to kill Zaroff before leaving the island. The excerpt is from the final scenes f the story when Zaroff discovers Rainsford hiding in his bedroom.
