I believe it's "could miss an invaluable opportunity", I'm not good at explaining but I'll try...he's saying that by not following God the way he intended, changing yourself for the better (like if you do drugs or if you have murdered someone, just done something bad and keep doing it and you don't repent), and just not throwing yourself on his mercy and not asking him to help you, that you are missing the chance to live forever and to be his friend. Of course, you shouldn't follow him just because you don't want to die, but if you truly are sorry for any sins you have committed, he will forgive you and he will help you.. (sorry if I didn't make sense)
