In the short story, “Dill Pickle,” by Katherine Mansfield, the characters know each other from quite some time ago.  This becomes obvious immediately to readers in the first line of the short story:  “AND then, after six years, she saw him again.”  Thus, the story begins by presenting readers with the fact that they once knew each other.  Just how well the two characters know each other is revealed throughout the story as throughout the story they each recognize little intricacies/characteristics of the other’s personality such as how he peels an orange, her penchant for smoking, her manner of speaking, to the desire to travel they both shared.  Thus, the two characters knew each other intimately the way those in love would have known each other.

two factors or characteristics of a chapter that might make it difficult to read would be words i don't understand, or if i don't fully understand what's going on in the chapter. strategies i can use to get through the difficult material would be a dictionary, and re-reading previous chapters to get a better grasp of what the author is trying to say.
