Mr. Auld is against Mrs. Auld teaching the narrator, Frederick Douglass, to read due to the fact that he is a slave. There are two clear sentences that show concern for the well-being of the narrator:

1. Mr. Auld found out what was going on, and at once forbade Mrs. Auld to instruct me further, telling her, among other things, that it was unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read.

2. He would at once become unmanageable, and of no value to his master.

This two sentences show why Mr. Auld fears and worries that Mrs. Auld teach Frederick how to read and write. During the time there was slavery in the United States it was illegal for a slave to know how to write and read as reading could lead the slave aspire to freedom or rebellion. Using Mr. Auld words, it was unlawful and unsafe for a slave to aspire to such things as they became unmanageable and it could lead to the death of the slave. Therefore, Mr. Auld was thinking about what was illegal and even life-threatening to Frederick.
