After reading the passage from "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," we can say the conflict creates suspense making the reader wonder:

Suspense is created when readers are left curious and wondering about something.

After reading the passage, we can safely eliminate options A and B. After such a brutal murder, whose reason has not been revealed, readers will not be worried about Hyde's background or home.

We can also eliminate option C, since the passage gives details on how he killed the poor man.

The correct answer is D. Since the reason, the motive for the killing is unclear, readers are left wondering why it happened.

dramatic irony occurs when the reader/audience knows more about a character's situation than the character does. the one main effect is that it gives the reader a sense of superiority, or detached superiority. the reader not only seemingly discovers what is revealed, but feels superior for doing so.
