Changae is a constant in life is my best guess.  All of the examples of the story talk about the changes of his grandparents/mother's house that was sold, the integration of blacks riding the bus with others and having access to purchased items that are the samethis is shown when it talks about both women wearing the same color of hat, the green hat unites both the white lady and the black lady whether or not they like it. They both chose the same item because they had similar taste and both at this point in time after all the changes in society could go into the same stores and shop, ride the same buses and be together in spite of their personal feelings.
