in "a sound of thunder," the protagonist is able to travel to the past. he is a hunter, and he pays for a trip to the past in order to kill a dinosaur. however, his carelessness leads him to kill a butterfly. although this seems to be a small event, it changes his present completely. the character is so affected by it, he kills himself. therefore, the real world was severely impacted by the fantastic world.

on the other hand, in "the nethergrave," we encounter a boy named jeremy who feels unhappy in the real world. jeremy is able to find relief by living a double life in a virtual world. he realizes that in this world, he can be anything he wants to be. this provides relief from the troubles of his real life. ultimately, the virtual world has such an impact on his life he ends up choosing it instead of reality.
