Read this excerpt from "the sinews of peace" by winston churchill: in those days there were high hopes and unbounded confidence that the wars were over, and that the league of nations would become all-powerful. i do not see or feel that same confidence or even the same hopes in the haggard world at the present time. which phrase best describes churchill's purpose for including this passage in his speech? to suggest that the united nations will be successful to claim that he was never hopeful or confident about the league of nations to forewarn that there is no guarantee that people are capable of ending war to prevent people from becoming too pessimistic
