Throughout the plot of Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," wherein not much is actually happening, dialogue and interactions between Montresor and Fortunato cleverly hint at the eventual gruesome demise of the latter. Because the story is told from the perspective of Montresor, we are invited to empathize with his point of view on the knave Fortunato. Playing on Fortunato's love of the finer things, Montresor hatches a diabolical scheme to get revenge. The interactions between the two characters advance the plot inasmuch as we see the contrast between what Montresor says and how he acts, versus how he builds to the ultimate fate of Fortunato and the fulfillment of the words on Montresor's family crest: "Nemo me impune lacessit." This translates to "No one attacks me with impunity."
