In Act I, scene I of Hamlet, we encounter watchmen Bernardo and Francisco guarding the castle at night. They hear some noise, but eventually Francisco goes to bed and is replaced by Marcellus and Horatio, a friend of Prince Hamlet. Bernardo and Marcellus tell Horatio that for the last two nights, they have witnessed an apparition, and that they believe the ghost to be the late King Hamlet. Horatio is skeptical, but the ghost appears before them. The ghost remains silent, but Horatio decides to inform Hamlet of the apparition.
