John Smith probably misread the actions of the Native Americans in several situations. One was during the the first part of his capture, when he was toured
around various tribal groups. Another was during the dinner, when Powhaten
pretended to attack him. The third was when Pocahontas "saved" his life. Take one
(1) of these and
1) List the specific instance (so I know which one you will discuss)
2) What John Smith thought and expected.
3) What the natives probably thought (hint, matriarchal society and playing tricks)
Your response will probably take 3 to 5 sentences. Each correct response for the 3 is
worth 5 points, and grammar counts for the other 5. Partial points are available.

Read the excerpt from the common sense of bicycling: bicycling for ladies. the bicycle is capable of such high speed that there is a strong temptation to ride so fast as to cause over exertion or excessive perspiration. on the other hand some people ride too slow, causing a zigzag and uncertain movement. while exercising reasonable caution, be a fearless rider. when you come to a steep hill, if the road is clear, let it go as fast as it will. if you rid yourself of that ghost of fear, coasting is one of the greatest delights of cycling. which is the best paraphrase of the text?

The harlem renaissance dawned in an era of pervasive racism and segregation. although legally "free," many african americans were still bound by ideas that had their roots in the slavery of earlier centuries. identity and freedom are important ideas presented in many of the poems from the harlem renaissance. furthermore, the values of identity and freedom are not unique to particular times and places. as hughes expresses in "dream variations," all humans want to be able to develop their identities in freedom. what role does freedom play in the poems you read in this unit? what is required of a society to enable each individual to be true to his or her identity and be free to live by that identity? write about at least three of the poems, describing how the poet uses imagery to depict freedom and identity, the lack of it, or the desire for it.
