Finding Folly
by Marty Alexander
Janna sank into the softness of the sofa as Folly danced in front of the TV. The bubbly
toddler was watching her favorite show about singing frogs and other woodland creatures.
She wanted to watch it all the time, and Janna didn't mind. It always made babysitting so
easy. Soon, Janna's eyelids began to droop to the soundtrack of a catchy tune about
woodland sounds on a summer night.
Gradually, in Janna's subconscious, the sofa and the TV faded away and a new scene
began to take shape. As the murky woods behind the house wafted into view, Janna couldn't
see frogs, but she could hear them-real frogs—their croaking accompanied by cricket
chirps, toad whistles and sounds she didn't recognize. But there was something else: Janna
couldn't see or hear Folly!
Suddenly stricken with terror, Janna called out to Folly. She wanted to run into the woods,
but she couldn't will her feet to move. After several horrifying seconds, she felt a nudge on
her cheek.
Janna sat upright on the couch, feeling the heavy thud of her heart beating in her chest.
Standing next to her with a look of total puzzlement was Folly.
"You're here!" exclaimed Janna as she scooped the little girl into her lap. To be sure she
was back to reality, she swept her eyes around the room and found all was as it had been
earlier--the sofa, the TV, and most of all, Folly.
Keep your eyes open, Janna chided herself, as they settled back down to watch TV
together
OC. by including dialogue between the two main characters
