Read the following fact. Eleven states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational marijuana use for adults over the age of 21.

This statement is a fact. It can be checked and proven to be true. There is no opinion about the issue either way, and the reader has no idea whether the author thinks the legal use of marijuana is good or bad. This is an unbiased statement.

1) Write a sentence reporting the same information but use the techniques described in the book. Influence your readers to view legal marijuana as a GOOD thing.

2) Write a sentence reporting the same information, but use the techniques described in the book. Influence your readers to view legal marijuana as a BAD thing.

Be subtle! Don't write, "Legal marijuana is bad" or "Legal marijuana is good." I want you to use figurative language, generalizations, allusions, euphemisms, connotation, misleading information, etc. to influence your readers. The goal is to practice the techniques so you will recognize them as a reader.

Just FYI... Please do not use this post to actually promote your stance on the legalization of marijuana. (That is a topic for discussion in another class.) The goal here is to practice both positive and negative techniques to influence your readers. After reading both of your sentences, I should still have no idea where you stand on the issue because you are going to write a sentence for both sides.
