Provide an analysis of a poem, either a poem from the lesson or one that you find on your own. Your analysis should include an objective summary of the poem, complete with a description of the poem's general subject matter and an interpretation of its themes or overall meaning. Your assignment should also include a line-by-line analysis of the poem that interprets the figurative or connotative meaning of individual words and phrases and describes their effect on the poem's tone. You are free to analyze any poem available to you. However:
Get approval from your instructor if the poem is from outside the lesson.
Choose a poem whose length is comparable to the poems in the lesson so that there's plenty to interpret.
Do not select "Spring and All" by William Carlos Williams, which has been explored thoroughly.
How you go about this project is up to you, but consider one of the following options:
Option 1: Provide a series of detailed annotations for a poem — for example, in the form of footnotes, endnotes, or hyperlinks that provide pop-ups. The annotations should help readers understand the literal and figurative meanings of select words and phrases in the poem and their effect on the poem's tone. Also, write an introduction that objectively summarizes the poem and provides an overall interpretation.
Option 2: Provide a dramatic reading of a poem, which you can record or perform live. Begin the reading with an introduction that objectively summarizes the key meaning of the poem. Then provide commentary during or after your recitation that explains the literal and figurative meanings of the poem's words and phrases. Interpret their effect on the poem's tone and the overall meaning you identified in your introduction.
Option 3: Write an essay that compares and contrasts two of the poems explored in the lesson. Your points of comparison should be the overall themes or main ideas of the poems, as well as how specific words, phrases, and figures of speech affect those themes or main ideas and the tone. Pick two poems that have clear points of comparison — for example, a common message, approach, or feeling.
If none of the options described appeal to you, feel free to take a custom approach as you fulfill all the requirements of the assignment. You are free to work individually or in a group, depending on your classroom situation and your instructor's preferences.

You must fulfill all the requirements listed whether you choose one of the options above or approach the assignment in your own way:
Provide an objective summary of the poem or poems you choose to analyze that explains the theme or central idea and that uses an objective tone even when making subjective interpretations.
Explain the meaning of individual words and phrases in the poem or poems: both their literal definition and their suggested or figurative meaning. Interpret figurative language for readers and identify the types of figures of speech the poet uses.
Describe how the suggested meanings in the poem (the figurative language, the connotations, etc.) affect the poem's overall meaning and its tone.
If you take a custom approach to the project, avoid simply going down the list of requirements and fulfilling them one by one without any context. Instead, create something with a consistent purpose, audience, and use: a presentation, an essay, an instructional video, a commercial, a letter, an app, or another similar approach.
Your effort should be about the same as it takes to write a 5-paragraph essay (around 1,000 words) or to prepare a 10-minute speech. Projects that require a group effort may be more work overall, but each group member's contribution should be measured against these examples. Before you submit your project for a grade, check with your instructor to make sure the amount of work you put into it is acceptable.
