4. Read the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” on page 77 and answer the following questions.

a. Look at lines 1 and 2. What is “nature’s first green” and why is it her “hardest hue to hold”?

b. What point is Frost making when he writes, “only so an hour,” “leaf subsides to leaf,” and “nothing gold can stay”? Think beyond the literal meaning.

c. What is its significance to the book (think characters, theme, plot, etc.)?

5. An allusion is a literary device that is a hint or reference to a real person, place, thing, or idea of historical, cultural, or political significance. What is one allusion in The Outsiders and what is its significance to the book? Why does Hinton include the allusion? Hint--there are multiple, including one in chapter 1.
