Our minds tend to only remember the good times of life, so before you go and do anything, review in painful detail WHY it’s been a long time since you saw them. If there were reasons for the split that you’d forgotten, while fantasizing about how great it was with them before, it’s time to ask yourself why you’d want to go through madness again instead of looking for a new partner that will love you just where you are - how you are - today.

Once you’ve done that, either you’ll realize you really do need to move on, in which case you stop listening or talking to anything or anyone that will bring the memory back up, and every single time your brain tries to wend it’s way back to that memory, you resolutely start thinking about something new and exciting — a vacation; a new project, a dish you want to cook; a new club to go to, whatever it takes to discipline yourself so that you at last close that file drawer of your life; lock it and throw away the key.

On the other hand, if you really feel the need to re-open that drawer, knowing that doing so may result in a ton of snakes jumping out and biting you, the get the courage to find the person, contact them and say what you apparently want to say. However, only do so if you can do it without selfishly disrupting their entire existing life. There’s an old saying here in the US: “You pay your dime and take your turn.” So there’s no guarantee that doing this will give you what you want, but not doing so if you really need to gains you nothing.
