I have not seen that series, or movie so I can not say why ISO that. sorry .

There are two reason.

Colin tells Mary and shows that this is a portrait of his mother. He covers it up because 1. he thinks of his mother as his treasure and does not wish to share it with anyone else. Or 2. Mary is laughing and so Colin gets offended while he is unhappy.
