Can someone help me writing the thesis statement for "A Mercy" by Toni Morrison novel? This is what I write, but not sure it is a thesis statement. The first one is the Mother-daughter bond. I come up with the idea:
The story is about females African Americans, mothers, young girls, and the tale of remote ancient traditions. It is about Florens, a young girl and a slave purchased by the Vaark family when she was eight. She went alone, and her mother remained, making her feel pain. Later in the years, smallpox killed Vaark and Rebekka, and his wife became sick. She sent Rebekka to go and find a blacksmith. Florens’ mother reveals in the last chapter of the novel that she is the one who sends her daughter to the Vaarks to save the young girl’s life from D’Ortega, a predatory and harsh master. In a more profound sense, the story uses a deeper insight to reflect on the family bonds established to survive the slavery sufferings, especially between the mothers and their daughter or daughters. Due to the diversity and complexity of the setting and the characters, many topics have emerged in the book in addition to several characters to demonstrate this unbreakable parent-child strong attachment, thus bringing the notion of slavery and freedom in the view African Americans' experiences. The establishment of the mother-daughterAmericans’ bond and how it impacted the African American family dynamic is evident across the themes used.
The other one is motherhood.
The female characters in Toni Morrison's A Mercy represent different portraits of
what motherhood is and show how, depending on social and personal reasons,
motherhood is different for each. In a literal definition and a spiritual
sense, Motherhood impacts children and the family unit, which is why it is so important. Morrison addresses the different portraits of motherhood through the context of the mother, the child, and the husband, with additional perspectives coming from slaves. The abandonment Florens feels at a young age, Rebekka’s heartbreak because of her lack of children, and Lina becoming a surrogate mother are all representations of different roles in motherhood that are either forced upon our adopted by these women.
