Spring and All
by William Carlos Williams

By the road to the contagious hospital
under the surge of the blue
mottled clouds driven from the
northeast—a cold wind. Beyond, the
waste of broad, muddy fields
brown with dried weeds, standing and fallen

patches of standing water
the scattering of tall trees

All along the road the reddish
purplish, forked, upstanding, twiggy
stuff of bushes and small trees
with dead, brown leaves under them
leafless vines—

Lifeless in appearance, sluggish
dazed spring approaches—

They enter the new world naked,
cold, uncertain of all
save that they enter. All about them
the cold, familiar wind—

Now the grass, tomorrow
the stiff curl of wildcarrot leaf
One by one objects are defined—
It quickens: clarity, outline of leaf

But now the stark dignity of
entrance—Still, the profound change
has come upon them: rooted, they
grip down and begin to awaken

Part A

What is the central idea of the poem "Spring and All" by William Carlos Williams?

After a barren and desolate winter, spring slowly brings new growth and with it, hope.

The winter landscape is desolate with leafless vines and trees along the muddy road.

The way to the hospital is windy and cold and filled with lifeless trees and bushes.

Winter has ended, and spring is finally fully alive with beautiful greenery.
Part B

Which detail from the poem best develops the central idea identified in Part A?

“stuff of bushes and small trees / with dead, brown leaves under them”

“Beyond, the / waste of broad, muddy fields / brown with dried weeds, standing and fallen”

“Now the grass, tomorrow / the stiff curl of wildcarrot leaf”

“Still, the profound change / has come upon them: rooted, they / grip down and begin to awaken”

2. Which details from "The Great Figure" by William Carlos Williams reflect characteristics of imagism?

Select the two correct answers.

The poem uses common speech to capture a snapshot of an ordinary experience.

Williams captures a distinct image of a 5 on the side of a red firetruck on its way to a fire.

Williams romanticizes the life of fire fighters with the lines “to gong clangs / siren howls.”

The poem focuses on the apprehension the firemen feel on their way to a fire.

Sea Rose
by H. D. (Hilda Doolittle)

Rose, harsh rose,
marred and with stint of petals,
meagre flower, thin,
sparse of leaf,

more precious
than a wet rose
single on a stem—
you are caught in the drift.

Stunted, with small leaf,
you are flung on the sand,
you are lifted
in the crisp sand
that drives in the wind.

Can the spice-rose
drip such acrid fragrance
hardened in a leaf?

Read these lines from “Sea Rose” by H. D.

more precious
than a wet rose
single on a stem—
you are caught in the drift.

What is the meaning of “you are caught in the drift”?

A sea rose is caught in the surf along the shoreline.

Gathering Leaves
by Robert Frost

Spades take up leaves
No better than spoons,
And bags full of leaves
Are light as balloons.

I make a great noise
Of rustling all day
Like rabbit and deer
Running away.

But the mountains I raise
Elude my embrace,
Flowing over my arms
And into my face.

I may load and unload
Again and again
Till I fill the whole shed,
And what have I then?

Next to nothing for weight,
And since they grew duller
From contact with earth,
Next to nothing for color.

Next to nothing for use,
But a crop is a crop,
And who’s to say where
The harvest shall stop?

In “Gathering Leaves,” Frost describes the unending task of gathering fall leaves and ending up with bags of leaves that serve no purpose.

Which lines from the poem best convey this thought?

“But the mountains I raise / Elude my embrace, / Flowing over my arms”

“Again and again / Till I fill the whole shed, / And what have I then?”

“Spades take up leaves / No better than spoons, / And bags full of leaves”

“An since they grew duller / From contact with earth, / Next to nothing for color.”

Which sentences from part 1 of the call of the wild would best serve as evidence of the theme "sometimes survival depends on knowing when not to fight"? buck had accepted the rope with quiet dignity. to be sure, it was an unwonted performance: but he had learned to trust in men he knew, and to give them credit for a wisdom that outreached his own. he had merely intimated his displeasure, in his pride believing that to intimate was to command. but to his surprise the rope tightened around his neck, shutting off his breath. he saw, once for all, that he stood no chance against a man with a club. he had learned the lesson, and in all his after life he never forgot it. that had given them an unfair advantage; but now that it was off, he would show them. they would never get another rope around his neck.
