Princess of the New World She was named Pocahontas, meaning playful girl. She was the favorite daughter of Powhatan, chief of the Algonquian tribe. The Algonquians controlled the Tidewater region of Virginia at the time of Pocahontas's birth. When she first spotted the English settlers, Pocahontas was enchanted by their foreign ways. However, she did not like the way they smelled. The English explorers did not bathe often. This was unfamiliar to Pocahontas, whose people bathed daily.

Despite their strangeness, Pocahontas realized the English were powerful. She wanted to help Powhatan by befriending the settlers and learning their language. She became an ambassador for Powhatan to keep peace between the colonists and the Native Americans. Her father valued her help in keeping the English pacified. As time went on, the Algonquians believed that the gods were becoming displeased with them for allowing the English settlers to stay in the New World. As a result, Captain John Smith of Jamestown, Virginia, was to be sacrificed to appease the gods. If Pocahontas had not intervened, he would have been killed.

Over the years, Pocahontas convinced Powhatan to stop attacking the colonies and commit to peace with the English. He even adopted Smith as his son, or deputy chief. Some say that the Native Americans often had ceremonies where they pretended they were going to sacrifice a captive. Then they would save the captive and adopt him or her into their tribe. Even so, Pocahontas's loyalty to Smith was a crucial part of early American history.

Gradually, Pocahontas became dissatisfied with her father's plans for her. Relations with the English began to worsen. Then the settlers captured Pocahontas to force Powhatan to stop attacking them. While she was a captive, she learned more about Christianity and eventually converted in 1612. When she was baptized, she took the English name of Rebecca. In 1614, she married John Rolfe, a successful tobacco farmer. They had a son, and in 1616, they went to England to promote the Virginia Company. Princess Rebecca's job was to draw more immigrants to the New World and get the support of the monarchy. Though she took a Christian name and wore English clothing instead of moccasins and doeskins, Pocahontas still loved her father and her people. She became a heroine in both cultures. Even the monarchy received her when she went to London.

Many important Londoners loved her, and she reunited with her old friend Captain Smith, whom she had thought dead. After seven months in England, the Rolfes sailed home. Sadly, Pocahontas died on the journey home of tuberculosis or pneumonia. Her son survived, and several Virginia families claim to be descendants of Pocahontas.

Captain Smith credited Pocahontas with saving Jamestown from the Native Americans. Pocahontas lived a short life, but she left an indelible impression on the pages of American history for her contribution to peace between the Native Americans and the English settlers.
