Explanation:

Find a common denominator that all of the fraction's denominators can equally be divided converted to by a whole number.

Example:

2/5      3/4       1/2    1/8

40 is the lowest common denominator that all the above denominators can be converted by a whole number

2/5 becomes 16/40

3/4 becomes 30/40

1/2 becomes 20/40

1/8 becomes 5/40

If you notices, all the fractions on the right can be reduced back down to the fraction on the left.

Once you have them all with the same denominator, then you can simply add or subtract the numerators and keep it over the same common denominator.
