In the 1850s, many Chinese workers moved to the United States. They worked in the goldmines, on farms and in factories. Chinese immigrants also were important in the building of railroads in the American West. As Chinese workers grew successful in the U. S., many started their own businesses. As the numbers of Chinese workers increased, so did anti-Chinese attitudes from other workers. This resulted in a law passed by Congress in 1882 called the Chinese Exclusion Act. This stopped Chinese workers from coming to the U. S. for 10 years. It was the first law in American history to place major restrictions on immigration. What is the main idea of this document?
