"Failing and Flying" includes the lines, "Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew. / It's the same when love comes to an end." Then the poem's speaker describes lovely, fleeting moments from an ended relationship and asks: "how can they say the relationship failed?" Gilbert's speaker counters "I believe Icarus was not failing as he fell, / but just coming to the end of his triumph." Do you agree or disagree with Gilbert? Does an intimate relationship need to last forever to be successful? Try to incorporate some of the ideas in Auden's poem "Musee de Beaux Arts" as well.
