About one hundred years ago, there was a terrible flood. An old,
dirt dam held back a huge lake. The people who lived in the valley
below the dam were worried. They were afraid the dam would
break. They wrote letters to the owners of the dam, who lived
far away. One owner wrote back to say that the dam was safe. On
May 31, 1889, it rained all night. The next day the dam broke.
More than two thousand people died.
