The Odyssey is easily one of the greatest adventure stories ever written, and many critics believe that you can learn more about life from it than almost any other book. Some say that half of the stories in the world boil back down to retelling The Odyssey. It was written 2700 years ago. For generations before that, the Greeks told it around the campfire. They had expert storytellers who entertained the camps after the sun went down. They told lots of different stories, but The Odyssey was one of their absolute favorites. Homer was one of these storytellers, and he is credited with being the first to assemble a single version and write it down. The Odyssey is important because it marks the move from an oral to a written tradition--one of the all-time greatest historical shifts in education, thought, and imagination. The Odyssey is part of that. The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, and the last man to return from the Trojan War. The assignment: as you read The Odyssey, you must identify 10 important passages (<40 lines). Each passage must represent one of the following Brevet notions:

1. Growth 2. Masculinity and femininity 3. Family 4. Love 5. Struggle 6. Difference 7. Rebellion and authority 8.Friendship 9. Connections 10. Dreams

For each passage you must do the following:
1. Take a picture of the passage or retype it.

2. Analyze the passage in terms of the work as a whole and how it develops the Brevet notion. What literary moves (figurative language, structure, irony, characterization, setting, rhythm, rhyme) does the author make to advance the purpose of the passage? How does this passage connect to the rest of the text? How can you connect the passage to your life, other books, movies, or the world? (~200 words)
