Mountaintop Rescue
Sam Santiago groggily pulled himself out of sleep at the insistent ringing of his cell phone. Moments later, he hurriedly dressed in the dim glow from the hallway night-light. When his wife woke up, she sighed. "Who is it this time?", she asked.
" A dozen Boy Scouts and their chaperones," replied Sam, slipping on a second pair of socks. "Over two feet of snow fell on the mountain last night, and the scouts and their leaders were unprepared. No one's heard anything from them, and the parents are understandably frantic."
" I'm heading for the airport," he added, grabbing his keys from the dresser.
"Oh, those poor boys," said Isabel, reaching for her glasses. She was fully awake now.
"Do you think it's safe to fly, Sam?" she asked, anxiously peering out the window at the steadily falling flakes. "Your visibility is going to be nearly nonexistent with this snow."
"I wouldn't go if didn't think I could bring them home safely," Sam promised. "You knew that, Isabel. I won't take any unnecessary risks."
Despite his reassurances to Isabel, Sam felt a wave of worry wash over him as he stood next to the helicopter. He took a deep breath of the icy air and prepared himself for a long night.
