by Black Hawk

1832

How does Black Hawk’s rhetoric in this excerpt advance his viewpoint that his cultural experience has fueled in him great animosity for white men?

The white men despise the Indians, and drive them from their homes. But the Indians are not deceitful. The white men speak bad of the Indian, and look at him spitefully. But the Indian does not tell lies; Indians do not steal.

He uses alliteration to emphasize the morals and values of the Indians.

He contrasts the image of white men driving Indians from their homes with examples of the admirable conduct of Indians.

He creates an extended metaphor to suggest he has a thorough understanding of white men.

He employs personification to capture the confusion he feels when dealing with white men.

Read this excerpt from Paragraph 4 of the speech.

Things were growing worse. There were no deer in the forest. The opossum and beaver were fled; the springs were drying up, and our squaws and papooses without victuals to keep them from starving; . . .

How does Black Hawk use rhetoric to advance his purpose in this excerpt?

He directly addresses his nation to explain that even though he is surrendering, he understands their plight.

He uses imagery of a barren forest and hungry women and children to show how the white men mistreated his nation.

He uses imagery of the deer, opossum, and beaver to show that the white men do not respect nature in the same way he does.

He directly addresses the white men to evoke a sense of responsibility for their actions toward his people.

Read the selection below and answer the question. an open boat by alfred noyes o, what is that whimpering there in the darkness?

'let him lie in my arms. he is breathing, i know.
look. i'll wrap all my hair round his neck' – the sea's rising,
the boat must be lightened. he's dead. he must go.'

see - quick - by that flash, where the bitter foam tosses,
the cloud of white faces, in the black open boat,
and the wild pleading woman that clasps her dead lover
and wraps her loose hair round his breast and his throat.
'come, lady, he's dead.' - 'no, i feel his heart beating,
he's living, i know. but he's numbed with the cold.
see, i'm wrapping my hair all around him to warm him.' -
- 'no. we can't keep the dead, dear. come, loosen your hold.

'come. loosen your fingers.' - 'o god, let me keep him! ' -
o, hide it, black night! let the winds have their way!

to fret the bare seas at the breaking of day. which choice best describes the conflict in this poem? the winds are rocking the boat. a man is thrown into the sea. a woman doesn’t want to let go of her dead lover. someone is crying in the darkness.

Ineed advice. i have a lot of friends at school but recently my best friend for some reason didn’t like our friend group. she wanted to switch to a new table during lunch. she said she found a new table where we would be welcomed if i wanted to come. i agreed because i knew i would continue to talk to them outside of lunch. after a month or two, my best friend got mad at our new lunch table group. so she left for a day or two, but i stayed because i actually kinda liked it there, even if it was kinda crazy. then she came back to the table. eventually i started to miss my old friends at my old lunch table. so i went over there for one lunch. then after lunch i sat at my new lunch spot before the bell rang. they all called me a traitor. so now i sit with my old lunch group, which is fine because i missed them, but i also miss my new, now old, lunch table. what should i do? p. s. sorry if you loose your last brain cells trying to understand this.
