Passage 1 Taipei 101

Taiwan is home to Taipei 101. Taipei 101 is the world’s tallest skyscraper.
The 1,679-foot-tall building is named after its number of floors. Its elevators travel at over 3,000 feet a minute. They can go from the 5th to the 89th floor in 39 seconds.
Taipei 101 is 271 feet taller than the Sears Tower. The Sears Tower is the tallest skyscraper in the United States. Taipei 101 is 184 feet taller than the Petronas Twin Towers. The Petronas Twin Towers previously held the record for being the world’s tallest skyscrapers.

Passage 2
Building Controversy

The Sears Tower is the world’s largest skyscraper, right? The answer to that is, “No.” The Sears Tower is quickly working its way to the bottom of the skyscraper heap. Is this because architects are designing taller skyscrapers? Well, yes, but it is also because of the way skyscrapers are measured and classified.
Currently, Taipei 101 is the world’s tallest skyscraper. It is a 101-story building that is located in Taiwan. It measures 1,671 feet. Its height was determined by measuring the building from its main entrance to its “structural top.” This means that building was measured from the sidewalk to its top, including its pinnacles.
The top of the Sears Tower is lower than the top Taipei 101. However, its antenna is higher than the top of Taipei 101. This does not matter. The group that measured the buildings does not count an antenna as part of a skyscraper.

Which detail is mentioned in "Taipei 101" but not in "Building Controversy"?
A.
Buildings are measured from the sidewalk to their structural tops.
B.

C.

Read the excerpt from cristina garcia’s dreaming in cuban. i don’t really want to talk about my father but i end up telling minnie how he used to take me horseback riding on our ranch, strapping me in his saddle with a leather seat belt he designed just for me. dad’s family owned casinos in cuba, and had one of the largest ranches on the island. there were beef cattle and dairy cows, horses, pigs, goats, and lambs. dad fed them molasses to fatten them, and gave the chickens corn and sorghum until they laid vermilion eggs, rich with vitamins. he took me on an overnight inspection once. we camped out under a sapodilla tree and listened to the pygmy owls with their old women’s voices. my father knew i understood more than i could say. he told me stories about cuba after columbus came. he said that the spaniards wiped out more indians with smallpox than with muskets. how does the structure of the excerpt add meaning to the passage? it includes historical information about the spaniards and indians to indicate the work is nonfiction. it describes the setting of the ranch owned by pilar’s cuban grandparents to explain family values. it uses several narrators to share their points of view about past and present life in cuba. it manipulates the chronological order of events to reveal the close relationship between pilar and her father.
