Today, the animal’s symbolism extends from university mascots to special edition state quarters. But in the mid-19th century, the United States government sponsored bison hunts that decimated the population; the goals of these hunts were to acquire the skins, to allow ranchers to have less grazing competition for their herds, and to starve the Plains Native American populations. But now, the great mammal is making a comeback.
