The author writes paragraphs 1 through 7 with a pace, using urgent questions and actions to set a mood of . "It had arrived one bracing November night, the moment Fionnuala had yearned for, yet postponed repeatedly until there were no more chances to forestall her decision. How could she leave until she could breathe a sigh of relief about her brother Eamon? How could she remain as long as Brendan waited for her, with dwindling patience, thousands of miles away?
Fionnuala’s mother spoke in the low, encouraging voice, a voice she had often used to soothe a skittish calf or colt on the farm. Yet even the soft glow of the fireside couldn’t disguise Mam’s tense expression.
“He’s here,” she said.
Padraig Slattery’s rickety heap of a cart had pulled up to the door of the cottage, and Fionnuala heard the restless snorting of the horse.
“Mam, you know I don’t feel right leaving you until Eamon is well and truly home.”
“Didn’t you see his handwriting on the envelope this very hour?” said Mam. “Eamon is homeward bound, never more to stray, so you must seize the hour and begin your own journey while there’s time. Your loyal Brendan and the offer of employment can’t wait forever.” Mam’s tone was playful, yet her eyes seemed devoid of cheer.
“Come now, Fionnuala, “ she said, affecting a smile, “America is waiting.”
