If I Were In Charge of The World Poetry Assignment
Directions:
1. Read the poem, "If I Were in Charge of the World" by Judith Viorst that is attached below.
2. Write your own poem titled “If I Were in Charge of the World” and model the attached poem below with your own ideas. Each stanza must begin with “If I were in charge of the world”. Your poem can be a perspective addressing the entire world OR more personally focused about your life, community or school.
3. The poem must be at least 16 lines. The poem must have four stanzas with four lines in each stanza. (A line is a complete thought. A stanza is a group of lines. Each stanza is one main idea.)
4. The poem must have a rhyme scheme! Pick from ONE of the two choices below:
ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GHGH (alternating lines rhyming in a stanza)
OR
AABB, CCDD, EEFF, GGHH (pairs rhyming in each stanza)
5. Make sure that each line is capitalized AND punctuated.
6. Include at least three different poetic devices (alliteration, repetition, onomatopoeia, rhyme, personification, hyperbole, symbolism, simile, irony, metaphor, imagery, etc.) in your poem and highlight them. List the poetic devices you used, at the bottom of your poem.
7. EXTRA CREDIT (2 points) If you recite the poem instead of typing your poem.
