HeLP MEEE PLEAS Thomas Edison Lights the Night
Thomas Edison (b. 1847, Milan, Ohio; d. 1931, West Orange, New Jersey), the most prolific inventor of modern times, once
said, "Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration." If so, Edison, with 1,033 patents to his name, was surely
one of the hardest working geniuses in history.
Edison's was truly a rags-to-riches story: a man with little means and less schooling who won riches and fame by devoting his
energies to solving practical problems and inventing useful devices.
Edison is best known as the inventor of electric lighting. In 1877, he started work on an electric lamp and within a year had
performed 1,200 experiments. Two years and $40,000 later, he had made a bulb with a filament of carbonized cotton thread, which
burned for two days. Finally, he perfected the first economically feasible incandescent light bulb with a filament of carbonized
bamboo. Electric lighting was first installed on the steamship "Columbia" and later in a New York City factory.
Thomas Edison was a born optimist who persevered when other men might have given up. Thanks to his stick-to-itiveness, the
world now has such inventions as the phonograph, the alkaline storage battery, and the motion picture camera.
