When you pedal, you force the chain rings to turn. Looking at the close-up of the drivetrain here, you should be able to see the teeth on both the big ring and the cassette. The ringâs teeth fit into the open spaces of the chain and pull it. The chain, in turn, pulls on the teeth on the rear cog and makes the rear wheel rotate. Thatâs what makes you go forward. You arenât actually forcing the front wheel to move at allâyou could say that itâs just along for the ride.
