According to the website Dangers of Fracking, a hydraulic fracturing job requires anywhere from one to eight million gallons of water. Think about the amount of water gas companies waste for a single fracturing job. Worse, much of that water is lost forever. As the watchdog group Food
& Water Watch points out, this water is mixed with sand and harmful chemicals chemicals known to make people ill—to create fracking fluid. At
least half of this toxic mixture is never recovered. In some cases, the amount that is recovered sits in open-air pits, where it evaporates into the air
and contributes to environmental problems like acid rain. In others, it is buried underground in deep injection wells. Many fear that toxic water
from these injection wells could eventually migrate into water supplies.
