I believe that the author Lois Lowry chose not to resolve the book clearly because she wanted it to be a mystery. The novel probably would have been better with a definitive ending because, it's always good to know how a story ends. if i was telling how I believed the story would end judging by the last two paragraphs, Id say that the main character and whoever was allied with him would live/ make it to whatever destination they are trying to make it to.
