Fiction writers use figurative language to make their writing more engaging and enjoyable. Figurative language adds meaning and depth to writing.

Similes allow writers to draw comparisons between unlikely elements or ideas. This kind of comparison allows readers to see different objects or concepts from a new perspective and draw connections they wouldn’t have otherwise thought of. Similes can convey fresh perspectives and develop striking images. This type of figurative language also gets readers to think deeply about the subjects being discussed. Similes convey the writer’s attitude toward characters and events, thus helping to create the tone of the story. Similes convey information subtly. For example, the sentence “She was like a ray of sunlight” conveys how the character being described brightens up a room. The simile also suggests a sense of beauty, hope, and positivity.

Personification is another important type of figurative language that writers use to enrich their writing. People often tend to relate better to human characters or characters with human traits. That's one reason why fiction writers frequently use personification. Using personification also helps the writer make a story more interesting and engaging to the reader. For example, a reader is more likely to connect with a rat that talks and has human emotions and relationships than a rat that only squeaks and spreads disease.
