More than anything, "I Stand Here Ironing" is a masterful use of first-person narration. So much is merely implied in the story, which is believable because a  person telling her own story would see no need to provide exposition that show would take for granted. For instance, the exact identity of the interviewer is never provided, but we come to understand that it is a figure from Emily's school, a teacher or guidance counselor. What this point of view requires is that the reader digs into the character's voice to understand the situation, while also reinforcing the idea that this mother does not- and never will- fully understand the depths of her daughter's pain and personality, Sadly. She tells the girl's story to try and understand, but can only approach it. She can never "total it all."  So I believe if the story "I Stand Here Ironing" if the author had told the story from a different point of view, then not only would the story change. But, the character's emotions that draw us in would be lost. Therefore there wouldn't be a point of the story. There would be no meaning. For there'd be an empty spot, for reading to want to understand Emily's feelings and emotions.
