Thoreau argument in civil disobedience is that citizens must disobey the rule of law if the laws are unfair. This was based on his experiences. He also explained the reason why he refused to pay taxes to protest slavery and American war.  

Thoreau was born on July 12, 1887 and graduated from Harvard University. His father was a concord pencil maker. After graduating from Harvard, Thoreau worked as a school master and later ventured in poet writing.

Thoreau was a member of a movement called transcendentalism. This movement is religious, literary and philosophical movement, which teachings was based on social reforms. The leader of the movement was Ralph Emerson. Emerson was a lecturer and a writer.  Being a member of the movement, Thoreau believed passionately on the teaching of movement which emphasized the need of social reforms to start with individual.  

Thoreau lived in a hut he built at Walden Pond. He meditated and wrote about nature throughout his entire stay in the hut.  

After United States attacked Mexico, Thoreau and other northern critics saw the war as an attempt by American to extend slavery into southwest. In order to protest the invasion, Thoreau stopped paying tax. Although, Thoreau refusal to pay tax was ignored by the local tax collector but he was later punished for invading tax after he publicly condemned US attack on Mexico.

He was arrested by sheriff in July 1846 and I spent one year in prison. Thoreau was released from prison after someone anonymously paid his taxes. The incident inspired Thoreau and he wrote an essay title Civil Disobedience.
