2. my grandparent’s house was a magical place for me when i was a little girl. there was an amazing loft where i could spy down on my brothers, a smelly chicken coop to visit every morning to check for fresh eggs, a wonderful swing in a gigantic, old maple tree and a tall, black totem pole on the front steps. the totem pole had always fascinated me and i loved to stare into the blank eyes of the thunderbird at the top and wonder what he was thinking. i enjoyed running my small hands over the chiseled black wood and marveling that the carver had included details such as eyes, wings and even feathers. however, it was the thunderbird’s nose that intrigued me the most. his long black beak stuck out from the totem pole and had two carved nostrils at the curved end. the nostrils were curious black holes that tempted me. one day, i cautiously poked my finger into the thunder-bird’s nostril, not sure how far it would go. suddenly, my little finger felt a sharp sting and i screamed as i yanked my finger out. not only had i poked my finger into the nose of the thunderbird, but also right into the back end of a bumble bee. whenever i see the stately totem, now on my parents’ front steps, i remember what a painful and embarrassing way it was for me to learn to “keep my fingers to myself”.

paragraph type:

3. when i think of the home town of my youth, all that i seem to remember is dust – the brown, crumbly dust of late summer – arid, sterile dust that gets into the eyes and makes them water, gets into the throat and between the toes of bare brown feet. i don’t know why i should remember only the dust… and so, when i think of that time and that place, i remember only the dry september, the dirt roads and grassless yards of the shanty-town where i lived.

paragraph type:

5. i do well in school, and people think i am smart because of it. but it’s not true. in fact, three years ago, i struggled in school. however, two years ago, i decided to get serious about school and made a few changes. first, i decided, i would become interested in whatever was being taught, regardless of what other people thought. i also decided, i would work hard every day and never give up on any assignment. i decided to never, never fall behind. finally, i decided to make school a priority over friends and fun. after implementing these changes, i became an active participant in classroom discussions. then my test scores began to rise. i still remember the first time that someone made fun of me because “i was smart.” how exciting! it seems to me that being smart is simply a matter of working hard and being interested. after all, learning a new video game is hard work even when
