a summer to remember

(1) when my parents told me i had to spend the summer with my uncle graham and aunt minnie, i begged them not to make me go. (2) however, i still found myself on a bus heading west.

(3) my uncle picked me up at the station, and i didn’t say much on the drive to his house. (4) i spent the day alone in the guest room, feeling absolutely miserable. (5) i covered my face with a pillow and hoped my sniffles were inaudible to everyone else in the house. (6) that first day, i emerged from the room only to eat meals with my aunt and uncle. (7) wondering what my mom was cooking at home, i stared at the chicken on my plate at dinner.

(8) the next morning, i awoke to an endless knocking on my door. (9) my aunt brought some food into my room. (10) aunt minnie placed the tray on the dresser and sat on the edge of my bed. (11) “because i have talked to your mom, i know that you love banana bread, annette. (12) i’m making some just especially for you,” she said, and i smiled.

(13) after breakfast, i went downstairs and spent time with my little cousin, lena. (14) she had wooden dolls that wore cute clothes. (15) i haven’t played with dolls in years, but it was fun. (16) afterward, i worked with my aunt in the garden, planting seeds for the first time in my life. (17) uncle graham brought home a dvd to watch after dinner. (18) we ate popcorn and laughed through the entire movie. (19) i began to realize that people choose to have fun or be unhappy. (20) the next day, we went to a neighbor’s house for a barbecue. (21) i met a boy named will and his sister, toni. (22) we have many similiar interests. (23) they invited me to go to the pool the next day. (24) uncle graham said i could go (but only if i promised to have fun).

(25) i spent the next afternoon at the pool with my new friends. (26) i met some other kids they knew, and we made exciting plans for the summer. (27) when i got home, aunt minnie said she was planning a surprise birthday party for uncle graham. (28) she asked me to organize it, and i enthusiastically agreed. (29) at that moment, i was certain that forgetting the events of this summer would be as likely as forgetting my own name. (30) this summer was great!
