Chaucer, as a disbeliever in the feudal system, represented the higher estate (Franklin) with mostly uncharming characteristics, while the lower class had more pleasant characters (Parson). The Franklin was consumed by materialism, he had disregard for others due to his personal goal of pleasure. The Parson, however, spent his time studying to better himself, instead of spending his money on exorbitant amounts of food like the Franklin, the Parson bought books.
