To Own or Not to Own

Oh my goodness, did I really just walk out of my front door and see a tiger walking around my neighborhood? Exotic animals have always been a trend to keep as a pet since many believe they are above nature and can train wild animals. In reality this not true. People should not be allowed to keep exotic animals as pets. For one, they are very dangerous and extremely capable of spreading diseases.

To begin with, exotic animals are very dangerous. According to the text, there were “1,610 reported incidents involving exotic pets” between 1990 and 2011.” They were not just any kind of incidents, they all caused harm to humans, and in some cases, even death. For example, the article, “Owning an Exotic Animal” states seventy-five deaths occurred as a result of owning an exotic animal. It is obvious, it is not safe for any human to own an exotic pet.

In addition, exotic animals can also spread diseases. From the reading, I know “90% of all reptiles that carry and shed salmonella [carry it] in their feces.” Since exotic animals usually do not receive their shots, the transmission of various diseases can occur easily. In other words, you can catch a disease by simply cleaning their feces. “Prairie dogs have been known to carry the plague and tularemia” according to the organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). If you know your human history, you would know that the plague was responsible for killing entire towns and cities of people. Therefore, keeping exotic pets can be deadly.

On the other hand, some may disagree because they believe some exotic animals can be great for people who deal with allergies. However, the kinds of pets that fit this category include some very deadly species. Look at the stats! They include reptiles, such as iguanas, pythons, and rattlesnakes, which have also been responsible for at least 18 human deaths. While they may be allergy-friendly, they may also be the reason for your demise.

In conclusion, this is why people should never own exotic animals. They don’t belong in human homes, they are dangerous, and can spread diseases. Who in their right mind brings a wild animal to live with them? After all, who wants to live in a home they may be afraid to walk into one day, or even worse, never leave again? Let exotic animals BE!

Read the excerpt from the common sense of bicycling: bicycling for ladies. the bicycle is capable of such high speed that there is a strong temptation to ride so fast as to cause over exertion or excessive perspiration. on the other hand some people ride too slow, causing a zigzag and uncertain movement. while exercising reasonable caution, be a fearless rider. when you come to a steep hill, if the road is clear, let it go as fast as it will. if you rid yourself of that ghost of fear, coasting is one of the greatest delights of cycling. which is the best paraphrase of the text?

Kwan gazed out at her brother and heard his shrieks of delight as he tried to direct their marvelous flying creation. she watched it wheel, spin, and dive—a wild, colorful bird putting on an aerial display. its gold and red crepe-paper wings fluttered in the air, mimicking the flight of a predatory bird surveying the landscape for prey. it swooped and dived, perhaps discovering a possible meal, and then went airborne again to avoid the rocky terrain below. min was the falconer, guiding his bird on its path through the sky, not yet ready to call it back to the ground. but kwan grew concerned when she looked out at the dark, threatening clouds beginning to roll in off the water. when she saw the streaks of lightning within the cloud formation, she pointed to the distant storm and called out to her little brother to bring in the kite. min nodded and rolled in the kite string, bringing his bird home. “let’s go,” kwan told her brother and put her arm around him to fold him safely under her wing as they both held onto the kite. “it’s time to go home.” how does the extended metaphor in paragraph 3 affect the mood of this passage? a-it creates a feeling of silliness that captures the absurd humor of the situation. b- it creates a sense of tranquility to match the feelings of min at this point. c-it creates a feeling of fear over what may happen if the kite crashes. d-it creates a sense of awe and wonder at min's mastery of the kite.

Match the bolded words in the excerpts to their contextual meanings. unoriginal well-groomed numerous he was a gentleman from sole to crown, clean favored and imperially slim. (from "richard cory" by edwin arlington robinson) this debt we pay to human guile; with torn and bleeding hearts we smile, and mouth with myriad subtleties. (from "we wear the mask" by paul lawrence dunbar) . .if it must, these things are important not because a high-sounding interpretation can be put upon them but because they are useful. when they become so derivative as to become unintelligible, the same thing may be said for all of us, that we do not admire what we cannot understand. .
