The Forbidden City was the result of a two-thousand year old history of classical Chinese and East Asian architecture and exercised great influence on many modern constructions worldwide. The construction of the massive palatial structure began in 1406, lasted 15 years, and required more than a million workers. The Forbidden City, now a museum, stands witness to the currents of changes that swept through China. As its name suggests, The Forbidden City was off limits for the ordinary people because it was an imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. The palace was an earthly symbol of the celestial—or heavenly—emperor's residence. Nobody could enter or leave the palace without the emperor's permission. The palace was the home of the emperor and the centerfold of the Chinese politics and ceremonies for five centuries.
