(2) Aztecs made red dye through a process that begins with drying and crushing the cochineal (a small insect that lives in and feeds off cacti). (3) Artificial dyes were introduced in the 19th century. (4) Because of this, people stopped using cochineal dye. (5) I'm thankful for this because I do not think insects should have to die so people can wear red shirts. (6) However, recent interests in all-natural products have led some clothing makers to begin using cochineal dye again.
