should there be anti-bullying programs in every school? bullying is a form of aggressive behavior that is widespread among school children and is often characterized by repetition and an imbalance of power. bullying can take many forms, such as hitting, kicking, and name-calling, as well as more indirect forms such as exclusion and gossiping. one of the first large-scale studies on bullying behavior in norway indicated that 1 of every 7 children was bullied regularly. subsequent studies in several countries have also shown that a substantial number of children are bullied. this is why every school should have an anti-bullying program. perhaps the most effective means of stopping bullying is giving students the ability to report bullying anonymously. when bullying victims and bystanders are free to report bullying anonymously, without fear of retribution from the bullies or punishment from school administrators, bad behavior can go down dramatically. since the 1980’s, anti-bullying interventions have been implemented into schools in many countries. a first large-scale intervention campaign was carried out in norway and was evaluated by olweus. results showed that schools implementing an anti-bullying policy had significant and lasting decreases in bullying behavior. as a result, anti-bullying interventions were implemented in other countries. studies have found an association between bullying and suicidal thoughts. the olweus bully prevention program was implemented in norway after a severe incident of bullying that sparked national attention. the program is designed to identify bullies, in elementary, middle, and high schools, and to them as well as their victims to cope with the effects of this type of school violence. the second step violence prevention program is also a classroom-based program that has shown some success in improving social competence and reducing anti-social behaviors as well as decreasing aggression.

Ead this excerpt from the introduction to wheels of change by sue macy. imagine a population imprisoned by their very clothing; the stiff corsets, heavy skirts, and voluminous petticoats that made it difficult to take a deep breath, let alone exercise. add to that the laws and social conventions that cemented a man's place as head of the household and holder of the purse strings. how suffocated women must have felt. and how liberated they must have been as they pedaled their wheels toward new horizons. why does the author include this excerpt?
