Read the passage. The butterfly life-cycle involves multiple phases. The first phase, the butterfly lays the egg. After the egg matures it hatches, but the caterpillar may be so small that it is barely visible. The caterpillar then eats an enormous amount of vegetation; some caterpillars will eat as much as their own body weight in one day. It takes about two weeks for the caterpillar to become fully grown. Once they are grown, they shed their skin, produce a silk sack, and begin their metamorphosis. This process then takes about another two weeks to become a fully developed butterfly.
