1. If you use the wrong punctuation, your writing will not sound correct. Period- To end the sentence. Comma- To represent a pause. Semicolon- To join two or more ideas in a writing piece. Quotations- To use a direct quote in your writing. Hyphen- To create compound words.

2. A topical paragraph takes a single idea or concept and develops it, a function paragraph has a specific purpose in a larger piece of writing. A type of a functional paragraph would be an introductory paragraph because it's telling the reader what the paragraph is going to be about.

3.A simple sentence consists of one clause. A clause consists of a subject and a predicate. The subject contains the noun and the predicate contains the verb. In order for it to be considered a simple sentence it must have these elements.

4. An essay is a piece of writing on a topic . One of the three main parts of an essay is the introductory paragraph. It supports your thesis and topic sentence and is introducing what your paper is going to be about. Second are the body paragraphs. Body paragraphs support your thesis statement and relate back to it in some way. If you're writing a paper about banning plastic straws, you're not going to have one of your body paragraphs about why you should buy a new dog. It doesn't support your thesis nor does it match the rest of your paper. And last is the conclusion or the concluding paragraph. It wraps up the paper, restates the thesis and closes the essay.

5. A thesis statement is the overview of the essay, basically a preview of what the essay is going to be covering. A thesis statement is important because without it you could be just jumping into your paper which could be confusing for the reader. Another reason that a thesis is important is because it's setting the “scene” for what the paper is going to be about.
