Journalists interview a variety of people. Within the world of sports, there is a plethora of rise-to-fame stories. This is my favorite because of its simplicity.

Cristian Santos sat in the guest recliner and made direct eye contact. He was one of Brazil's top soccer defenders. Keeping things under control was second nature to him. I had no idea that this man played such a key role in his family, community, and the sport of soccer.

In Brazil, soccer is a means to an end. If you are one of the lucky ones, you can be drafted to the national team. You've made it. You have money, unlimited travel, and success. Riches can be shared with family and friends. As the family benefactor, you can reform your family's quality of life.

Santos provided a short autobiography. Born in 1985, he was the oldest of five children. From age five onward, he cared for his younger siblings. There was always a pickup game of soccer going in the local park. Wherever there were people, there were eyes to watch his little brothers. Early on, Santos showed promise. He was a natural leader. Within two years, at age seven, he was drawing up teams and organizing neighborhood games. It seemed natural. By the age of 15, he was the player-coach of his team. At 18, he was the convener of the inter-city soccer league. His charisma was used to entice sponsors for transportation and registration fees to tournaments. Drafted to the national team at 25, he had to decide which role he would follow: player or coach.

Santos made the decision to play for as long as possible. The financial gains were better as a player. If he played a smart game, he could extend his playing career. Therefore, he developed a superior kick. Known as “The Mule,” he could pass the ball from end to end. Guarded by his teammates, he was frequently passed the ball so that he could kick it to the opponents' end. Santos needed only to maintain his kicking skills.

Those kicking skills were developed through the years. His skills resulted from hard work, the goal to succeed, and motivation to improve his family's life. Cristian Santos used the game of soccer as a tool. He had knowledge and determination. At the end of the interview, Santos commented that his family mattered, so in his mind, he would be their salvation. Simply, mind over matter.

The Finish Line

This is an interview recap of the challenges that athletes overcome to be successful. In track and field, you must run faster, jump higher, or throw farther to win. Charlotte Williamsburg was a sprinter who beat the odds.

©
Charlotte was the only child of a small-scale farm couple. Everyone needed to work to make ends meet. Charlotte herded the cows to and from the pasture for milking. During the day, the cows could wander quite a distance. This was the best because Charlotte was able to run.

At age 10, Charlotte won the local foot race at the Fall Fair. She competed in every race and beat men twice her age. At 18, she won a scholarship to an Ivy League school. They had seen her run and wanted to train her. At age 20, she competed in her first Olympic Games. Charlotte won. From cow pastures to an Ivy League school to the Olympic podium, Charlotte Williamsburg met her goal, 100 meters at a time.
