Green Teams: Sports and the Environment adapted from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency

Across the country, the sporting world is saving energy, cutting waste, and cleaning up at sporting events to show its commitment to the environment. This is a goal that has many benefits. A recent Sports Illustrated cover story "Going, Going Green" noted that as global warming changes the planet, it is changing the sports world.
The most basic reason to go green in sports is to help achieve sustainability. Sustainability is based on a simple principle. This principle states that everything we need for our survival and well-being depends on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony. These conditions help meet the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations. Sustainability contributes to environmental benefits like conserving natural resources and preserving biodiversity. This protects and improves air and water quality and reduces waste streams.
Greenhouse gases trap heat and make the planet warmer. Human activities are responsible for almost all of the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere over the last 150 years. The largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities in the United States is from burning fossil fuels. Sports teams across the country have been working to address this. Teams have begun to use renewable energy sources when looking to power their major events. They also have been working to cut back on electricity usage, whether it be for a big game or a practice session.

Select the correct text in the passage. which two sentences in this excerpt from f. scott fitzgerald's "winter dreams" seem to foreshadow dexter’s future obsession with “possessing” judy jones? now, of course, the quality and the seasonability of these winter dreams varied, but the stuff of them remained. they persuaded dexter several years later to pass up a business course at the state university—his father, prospering now, would have paid his way—for the precarious advantage of attending an older and more famous university in the east, where he was bothered by his scanty funds. but do not get the impression, because his winter dreams happened to be concerned at first with musings on the rich, that there was anything merely snobbish in the boy. he wanted not association with glittering things and glittering people—he wanted the glittering things themselves. often he reached out for the best without knowing why he wanted it—and sometimes he ran up against the mysterious denials and prohibitions in which life indulges.
